The purpose of Cambodia Kids is to provide an education for the children
of Cambodia and protect them from various threats, such as, child trafficking,
prostitution and child labor.
When you give to Cambodia Kids, 100% of your donation goes directly toward
the children who desperately need your help. The directors, administrators,
and officers are all volunteers. There are no salaries paid. All funds
collected go directly to the education, safety and well being of the children.
John Sylvia, an American traveling through Cambodia, started Cambodia
Kids in 2003. During his travel through Cambodia, John witnessed hunger,
children living in garbage filled streets, and poverty. He was amazed
at the number of children and adults he encountered with missing limbs.
There are still millions of active landmines throughout Cambodia left
over from years of war.
John stopped in Sihanoukville, a remote town on the southern coast of
Cambodia. The beach was filled with malnourished, neglected children selling
trinkets made by their families. These children work on the beach all
day, convincing the travelers to buy the trinkets, so they could earn
enough money to buy food for themselves and their family. John was their
best customer, buying everything they offered, knowing he had to find
a way to do more to help these children.
He went to the local schools and found them empty. To be enrolled in school,
the tuition had to be paid, parental permission was needed and the children
needed proper shoes and clothing. John visited the families of the beach
children and got their permission, clothed the children and paid their
tuition. Then a strange thing happened. Every day when John was on the
beach more children came, and they knew two words, “Me School”.
That is how Cambodia kids was born. Now 2 years later, Cambodia Kids has
filled its third school, and the list of children waiting to enroll is
growing.
The children enrolled in Cambodia Kids schools are taught, Cambodian History,
English, Chinese, Reading, Math and Computer skills. Informal group sessions
teach the children how to recognize the threat of foreign and local predators.
This creates a line of communication between the children and our organization
to protect them from child trafficking, slave trade, and prostitution.
Cambodia Kids, believes that education can change the world. The proof
of this lies in the faces of the smiling children. The sparkle in their
eyes is a sign that they are also learning that maybe they too, like the
rest o f the world, can have a future.
We have accomplished a great deal in the past 2 years. The beacon of hope
is shining, but as we grow, the need for help is also growing.
-
We need buses to transport the children to and from
school.
-
We need computers to transport the children into the
21st century.
-
We need funds to feed, clothe and provide medical
care for the children.
-
We have to help these children now, so their future
and ours is safe and secure.
-
We need money, we need your help.
With your help, we can continue to prove that education can change
the world.
